Underbarn, Portland Harbour
Saturday November 18th 2017
I set off for Portland Harbour this morning with the intention of filming a flock of goosanders that have been feeding there recently, but when I arrived there were no goosanders to be seen anywhere.
There was a group of cormorants fishing off the beach though, so I filmed them instead.
These cormorants were fishing co-operatively, ganging up on a shoal of fish to increase their chances of catching something.
A couple of days ago I filmed this less fortunate cormorant just along the coast.
There have been a lot of nets set in the harbour recently, many of which will be catching birds as well as fish.
The fisherman that set this net soon returned and carefully removed the cormorant without harming it. Another bird was not so lucky though and looked like it had been dead for some time.
Several years ago I made this video of a cormorant swallowing a huge eel at Radipole Lake.
But my most watched cormorant video by far is this one of a bird diving in slow-motion.
