Arne RSPB Reserve
Tuesday January 15th 2019
From the National Trust hide at Middlebere Farm I was looking across Middlebere Lake towards the Arne reserve.
It was low tide and the exposed mud was covered in waders, mostly Curlew and Redshank with increasing numbers of Avocets walking towards us from further out in Poole Harbour. When this Grey Plover appeared I was not really surprised to see it, but on closer inspection it looked unusual.
I can't remember a Grey Plover looking so strikingly pale, especially around the face. It reminded me a bit of an adult bird, but without the black underparts. Here's a summer adult I filmed at Lodmoor RSPB Reserve six years ago.
Most Grey Plovers I see are presumably the darker-looking young birds, like this one at Ferrybridge in autumn 2017.
